Downtown Parking

September 16, 2008 | 4 Comments

Up here in Great Falls, the cost of parking downtown might be going up from 25-cents to 50-cents per hour. I’ve got no problem with it, but there are plenty of folks who are steamed about it. Someone mentioned to me that there are no parking meters in downtown Missoula and Bozeman, which got me wondering: how do other communities in Montana deal with downtown parking – or do they at all? Is Great Falls the only “metered” downtown community? Drop a comment and let me know if you have to drop some silver for the privilege of parking in your downtown.

I think there are parking meters in Missoula, at least there were when I lived there.

They are building a big parking garage in Bozeman. You’ll have to pay to park there.

I guess in Livingston (where I live) they make their money by issuing tickets to those who park for more than 2 hours downtown!

Most downtown Missoula streets do indeed have parking meters.

Downtown Billings has had parking meters for years and when the City Council decided to fix the downtown parking shortage problem they built several parking garages and charged folks to park there also.

When shoppers fled to the malls with their copious amounts of free parking the city council scratched their head in wonder as to why everyone fled downtown.

They have recently raised parking rates to 50-cents per hour and council members still can’t figure out why folks are fleeing. Maybe I need to run for city council…

Bozeman does not yet have meters. I am sure it’s only a matter of time. Butte doesn’t either. I imagine putting meters in Butte would result in total anarchy and the burning of Uptown.
