Today in Montana History

July 25, 1901

James Winters is shot and killed by an unknown assailant or assailants at his ranch south of the town of Landusky. It is possible that the shooting is motivated by revenge and the killer is Harvey Logan, aka Kid Curry, of the Wild Bunch. James Winters shoots and kills Johnny Curry, Harvey’s brother, in 1896. Historians are able to place Logan in the vicinity of the murder. Logan and other members of the Wild Bunch rob the Great Northern Railroad near Malta in early July and probably hide out somewhere in either the little Rocky Mountains or the nearby Missouri Breaks.
