It’s been confirmed that Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama will be visiting Butte, America on the 4th of July, aka Independence Day. A former Butte resident ponders the excitement, and Big Sky Cairn notes the possible consequences of the ensuing media circus:

…I’m not sure how to feel about Obama’s decision to come to Butte for the 4th. On the one hand, it’s kind of cool. But…there is the real possibility that his presence will ruin the very idyllicism that his campaign is trying to harness. Police officers who would have had the Fourth off, will now be working security. Thousands of out-of-towners will invade the parade route. And journalists of all sizes and stripes will be working Harrison Avenue for B-roll and man on the street interviews. Yes, it is going to be Mansfield-Metcalf part deux.

But the best part of Obama visiting Butte – again! – is summed up by a commenter over at Left In The West: “I’ll bet the butt cheeks of all those liberals in Missoula are clenching, big time.”

I don’t know nothin’ about no butt cheeks. I’m excited to go see Barack in Butte. It’s the perfect place for him to demonstrate his genuine commitment to average, working-class citizens.

    Wake Up People!!!!!!

Obama characterizes himself as a post-partisan candidate willing to reach across the political aisle, and yet not once has Obama ever sought to work with Republicans, where he really risked the ire of the base in his own party…until now.

I’d like to see the RNC organize Frank Luntz-like Democratic and Independent focus groups across the country, where they point out the multitude of instances where McCain has gone against the grain of the GOP, from immigration reform to global warming and cap & trade to Guantanamo and waterboarding, and then ask these undecided likely voters who are leaning toward Obama, if they can name not just an accomplishment of his, but one time where he stuck his political neck out to do what he thought was right, even if it meant pissing off people in his party. I would ask these people in the focus group what it would mean to them if a politician failed to take a position on controversial issues one way or the other, refusing to vote yea or nay, but simply saying ‘present.’ And then inform the group of the 130 times Obama, as an Illinois state senator, took the easy way out, unwilling to take a stand or show conviction when it could come at a political cost.

I would note that Obama has, in the past few months, “refined” his previously-held positions on NAFTA, meeting unconditionally with our enemies, Reverend Wright, immunity for telecoms re: warrantless wiretapping, public campaign financing, the constitutional right to a handgun, whether the issue of gay marriage should be determined by each state, and now, the single issue that got Joe Lieberman ostracized from the Democratic Party…Iraq.

And then ask…Is there any policy position on which Obama could shift that would cause you to question or abandon your support for him?

If you folks don’t understand what Eric is saying, let me translate:
“The sky is falling, the sky is falling!”
Eric, we will survive eight years of George W and we will survive the next four years of either an Obama or McCain presidency. Lighten up dude.

My family had great seats for Obama’s appearance. We all got to shake his hand. It definitely spiced up the parade this year!
