Big Sky Embarrassments

September 24, 2007 | 13 Comments

Over at Dustbury, Charles has an entry about a list of the “Top 100 Oklahoma Embarrassments.” Among the guilty: Toby Keith, Dr. Phil, and the movie “Where The Heart Is.”

That got me wondering – if we were to compile a list of the “Top 100 Montana Embarrassments,” what – and who – would we include? But given our rather small population, maybe we ought to make it a slightly smaller list. Let’s settle on the “Top 27 Montana Embarrassments,” shall we? Throw out suggestions — politicians, athletes, events, musicians, whatever. Once we get plenty of entries, I’ll set up some sort of a voting mechanism and we can rank them.

I’ll have to think about it, but right off the top of my head: Ryan Leaf.

July 4, 1923: Jack Dempsey vs. Tommy Gibbons in the last green wood stadium built in the U.S.

Following the fight, the town of Shelby was basically broke and four banks in Shelby and one in Great Falls were bankrupted.

    Heaven’s Gate (the film).
The Berkeley Pit (which a local Butte priest affectionately referred to as Anus Mundi).
Custer’s Last Stand. (? Maybe not an embarassment to Montana, but it sure would have been for Custer … if’n he’d a’ lived.)
The ‘Battle’ of the Big Hole.
W.R. Grace, and the mess they left in Libby.
The Trochtmans and their Militia of Montana.

But mostly, I think Craig nailed it in one … Ryan Leaf.

Dave, sorry to inform you, but, again, I’m not getting any eMail alerts that others (plural) have posted a comment to a thread where I have previously posted a comment.

I dunno. I’d say that the Berkeley Pit is almost a source of perverse pride. :)

    Embarrassments?

How about the almost 80 people convicted during WWI for sedition who were all recently pardoned.

I remember as a kid signs in the stores front windows that said no dogs or Indians allowed. How’s that for embarrassment?
