Big Sky Blog – FAQ

Q: What is a “blog?”
A: It is a variation on the term “web log,” which is an on-line journal (or diary) of thoughts, news, events, links, observations, and such. Most blogs are owned & operated by one person, but some – like the one you’re reading – are collaborative efforts with many users (”bloggers”).

Q: What is “Big Sky?”
A: That’s a nickname for Montana. You have to see the sky here to fully understand. The sky truly looks incredible here. You can reach up and touch it, but it is so “big” that it just overwhelms you (in a good way).

Q: What else should I know about Montana?
A: Montana is the 4th-largest state, and populated with less than 1 million people. That translates into a small town with long roads. It is also known as the Treasure State, because Montana is rich in natural resources and precious metals. Montana is also home to the friendliest people that you’ll ever meet.

Q: Why a Big Sky Blog?
A: Several reasons: first, because Montanans by nature are very friendly, enjoy meeting each other, and are very sociable. Second, Montana is a BIG place, with not a whole lot of people. We thought it might be nifty to have a sort of “blog central” where regular bloggers can hang out sometimes. Third, this is an “open blog” – anyone can register and post an entry. That makes it a collective voice and view of Montanans. Fourth, it is a showcase for newly-discovered Montana bloggers, which we affectionately term “YAMBies” (Yet Another Montana Blogger).

Q: So I can register and make my own post?
A: You can, provided it (a) is not despicable or hateful and (b) is Montana-related.

Q: Do I have to live in Montana to register?
A: Nope. Anyone who lives in Montana is welcome to register and post; if you don’t live in Montana but have something to say (or ask) about Montana (upcoming vacation, planning to move here, share pix of previous visits, etc), it should be OK.

Q: Really? I can post an entry about anything at all?
A: Well…given that this is the BIG SKY BLOG, your entry should be about Montana. Montana people, places, events, experiences, scenery…you get the idea.

Q: Is it hard to register and create an entry?
A: Nope…register right here, and then take a look here if you need some help (visual).

Q: I’m not sure that I want to register, but I would like to leave a comment on someone else’s entry…can I do that?
A: Absolutely. If you would like to leave a comment about an entry here at the Big Sky Blog, go right ahead — you don’t need to register or sign-up or anything. Just click on the word “Comment” that appears underneath the entry that you want to comment on. But – in the spirit of Montana hospitality – don’t be a jerk. If you disagree with someone, or have a very strong opinion, great — you can let it be known in the comments without foul language or personal attacks. Cool?

Q: Who’s in charge here?
A: No one is exactly “in charge,” but David created the site in August 2004. He has a personal blog and a blog about Great Falls. In addition, there are some regulars around here, representing the various locales of Montana. Take a walk through the archives or categories and see what they have to say about news items, their communities, and such.

Q: I’m still confused.
A: Drop me an e-mail (bigskyblog @ gmail.com) and I’ll try to clear things up. Remove the spaces before and after the @ sign, though.

Q: Can I subscribe to this blog via e-mail?
A: Of course! Just click here to receive an e-mail whenever new content is posted. If there are no new entries, then you won’t receive an e-mail – only when there is piping-hot new stuff.

Q: Wait a minute…isn’t Montana full of militia-men, crazed psycho bombers, and other scary stuff?
A: No.
