A History of Montana

David in Great Falls

Well, this certainly looks cool: A History of Montana by Kodak, a new blog from our very own Courtney! History + pictures = great idea. Bonus: she’s got a massive number of Montana links in the sidebar, and the design is spiffy, too. First up is the town of Glendive!

Butte, America

David in Great Falls

Watching a documentary on PBS right now called “Butte Reborn.” Until I moved to Montana four years ago, I didn’t know much about Butte: pretty much only the name and that it was in Montana. I’ve learned a lot about it since arriving here — truly one of the most unique towns in the American West, if not America. And one of the things that make Butte so special is the Favorite Son, arguably the most famous daredevil in modern times: Evel Knievel! Which reminds me: this weekend is “Evel Knievel Days,” a three-day celebration of all things Evel and Butte. Can’t make it this year, but I’m sure some of you Big Sky Blog readers will be there! UPDATE: oops – should have included a link to Butte Talk, a community blog by, for, and about Butteans! Uh, is that a word? Also go visit Mike Able Xray, a blog by a cool Butte dude.

UPDATE: ZenPanda provides us with a link to some great photos of Evel Knievel Days 2006! Take a look!

Where To Eat?

David in Great Falls

Received an e-mail from Ruth, who is looking for some advice:

We’ll be flying into Great Falls next week, then traveling to Cut Bank, spending time in Glacier Park, probably visiting Missoula before flying home again.

Can you all recommend your favorite places for “clean food?” Fresh ingredients, preferably local; comfortable surroundings; no fast food and franchise restaurants. Nothing fancy. Organic, health food — the label doesn’t matter. Just good food prepared with care.

Free Wifi and great coffee a plus. Thanks so much.

So, fellow Big Sky Bloggers – can you help Ruth with some good tips?

Rolling Stones in Missoula

Jen

The Rolling Stones are coming to Montana
As Montana’s News Station first reported this morning, The Rolling Stones have officially announced they are coming to Missoula.

According to a Rolling Stones Satellite promotional feed, the band has included a stop at Washington-Grizzly Stadium on October 6th, as part of their “A Bigger Bang” tour.

UPDATE from Dave: ticket information right here.

MORE: hang on — that ticket site may not be legit — I haven’t purchased a ticket to a rock concert since Van Halen in OKC circa 1984, so I’m a bit clueless…but Patia is investigating to see what the story is…more news as it develops!

UPDATE from Jen: The Stones concert has been rescheduled to October 4th (Wednesday).

L&C +200

David in Great Falls

The Lewis & Clark Bicentennial fiasco has become fodder for the Wall Street Journal, as pointed out by Chelsi Moy in the Great Falls Tribune. The multi-year commemoration of Lewis & Clark’s expedition hasn’t drawn nearly the number of tourists & supporters as event organizers predicted, leaving some communities holding the bag. Here in Great Falls, turnout for the “Explore The Big Sky” month-long celebration was lighter than expected, and the civic budget took a hit of approximately $500,000. In the extended entry, there is a link to the WSJ article as well as the entire text (in case the WSJ article disappears)…

BSB Map

David in Great Falls

Hey, all you Big Sky Bloggers – add yourself to the Big Sky Blog map!
UPDATE: don’t feel bad, Courtney – it’s not quite intuitive. Ning is a pretty nifty website that serves as an “app creator” for people like me who are too ignorant to figure out stuff on their own :-). If you want to add your location to the map, just click on the “Add A Photo” tab; the next screen will prompt you to upload a photo and enter your town & state.

Redivivus Again

David in Great Falls

Following on the post below about UoM: let’s all go visit Katie’s place and leave a comment or two – maybe we can get her to begin updating her blog again! Her most recent entry is about a older fellow who sat in front of her during a physics course, and she muses on his background. And once you’ve said howdy to Katie, be sure to check out the entire Big Sky Blogroll — three additions this week along — there’s PLENTY of good stuff in the Big Sky Blogosphere!

Grizzoulian

David in Great Falls

Colin O’Keefe alerts us to the existence of “The Grizzoulian,” a blog dedicated to all things Griz – as in the University of Montana Grizzlies! Basketball, football, golf, with more to come I suspect. Why did he start this blog?

I’m Colin O’Keefe, a Sophomore journalism student at the University of Montana, and avid fan of the Griz. After moving to “The Zoo” and away from the three major teams, DirecTv sports packages, and ESPNEWS that came with living in a suburban Seattle home I needed teams to follow. A mediocre yet enjoyable football season and a Stanford upset later my blood shifted from red and began to run with a maroonish hue.

Also included are links to other Griz fan sites, team rankings, and news. Very cool, Colin!
UPDATE: yeah, probably should have included the link, eh?

Visiting Montana

David in Great Falls

Got an e-mail from a reader who is going to be visiting Big Sky country soon, and he writes:

I will be vacationing in Montana during the last week of August/first week of September. I will be staying in Kila (near Smith Lake). I want to take my five year old son fishing. Would you or any of your readers have some advice or where and when?

P.S. Thanks for your blog.

Well, thanks for the P.S. – much appreciated! So, fellow Big Sky Bloggers, any advice for this father & son? I’d never heard of “Kila” until this e-mail, but it’s located up in the NW near Kalispell according to Google Maps.
