Hi All -
I posted this to a thread (right word?) of this category before, so if this is redundant, please accept my profuse apologies…..I haven’t blogged before…
Thinking about moving to MT in the not-too-far-off future. I’ve been up in the Flathead Valley and Missoula areas and loved it (esp. Flathead). Though in saying that, I’m not limiting myself to that area necessarily. Anyhoo – point is, I’m gettin’ tired of moving (lived in about 40 states). Trying to find a place to stop and make home. One important realization about myself is that I can’t stand months of no sunshine. You can throw the elements at me, but no sunshine for weeks and weeks makes me batty. I’m currently living in Washington state (now you know where this might be going?). Love the mountains and all the beauty, but can’t stand the lack of sun/light for weeks at a time in the winter. Considering places just on the east side of the mountains here, as well. But I really LOVED Montana the couple times I’ve been there. So I’m doing some reasearch on MT, and trying to get some idea of my options.
Any input you all have on places that have winter sunshine in MT would be mucho appreciated. Looking to -eventually- have a small acreage with a few horses, and would like to be somewhat close to town (within an hour or so of one of the bigger towns w/ an airport). I’m hoping to be working a part-time job (I have tons of admin experience and such – currently working as a paralegal in IP; I have experience working in social work with kids, too. am not above anything else, and, in fact, it might be nice to DO something else.). I AM planning to be teaching a little guitar to kids part-time – but that’ll take time to get going, so the job is a necessity. Anyway – the long and short of it is, I am looking to get the h-e-double-toothpicks out of the city once I get my ducks all in a row (or they get ME in line, on or the other), and am looking for a place that won’t leave me in the DARK

I think Helena or Great Falls might be ideal…with your skills and experience, I’d wager you could easily find work. Not entirely sure about Helena, but here in Great Falls, it’s rare to go more than a few days without beautiful sunshine. And talk about sunshine – wow – the crispest, most beautiful blue sky you can imagine! Plenty of open space just outside of town in the surrounding area, so finding your acreage probably wouldn’t be difficult, either. Come on down!
David is right on target with his comments about Great Falls.
It is sometimes cold here, but dark and dismal days are few and
far between. In fact, we have more VFR fly days (visual flight
reference i.e.; pretty clear) than any other city in the continental
US. Helena gets socked in a lot more often but is still a lot
clearer than much of the West coast.
The economy in Great Falls has been stable for many years and is
relatively resistant to recession. Recent indications are very
promising for a period of increased economic activity which should
further improve the economy over the next few years.
I would also note, unemployment is very low in Great Falls so those
seeking work have a number of options.
I would encourage you to consider Great Falls your new home.
What better place to announce this than on the Big Sky Blog! The first blog directory/search engine/webring/raking website created BY A MONTANAN has just been launched! Check it out! http://www.wutzle.com
Hey – thank you all for the information and suggestions. I really appreciate it – that’s very helpful. Gives me a couple places to go on. Will check ‘em out and explore.
Hm…winter sunshine? How about San Diego? I don’t think Montana is your place…
The Flathead valley is probably not the place for you. Having been born and raised there, I never really knew just how cloudy it was -at least in the winter- until I left and lived throughout the state. The weather in Billings is especially warm and temperate, Bozeman is colder but plenty of sun. Missoula is a little better than Flathead, but still quite cloudy. Can’t speak for Great Falls as I haven’t lived there… now I make my home in Livingston, lots of sun, beautiful… and I’ll even take all this wind over the ‘flatheadfog’! Surely, anywhere you end up will be a beautiful place that lends toward a great lifestyle… if you can make a living. ;-)
