Four Seasons

David in Great Falls

Montana: “The Seasons here are very distinct, from the lush greens of Spring to the beautiful wildflowers of Summer, the earthtones of Fall, and the snows of Winter.” I don’t know where that quote is from, but it sure is accurate.

Ouch. Craig, you were one of the first Montana bloggers, and always one of the best. Although we understand your decision, it still saddens us somewhat (all MT bloggers, and then some). Until you return, best wishes to you, The Spousal Unit, and the kidlets. Come on back anytime, and we’ll be here.

* And remember, you’re always welcome to post here at Big Sky Blog — no commitment, and no salesmen will call!

Sexy Getaway?

David in Great Falls

Over at MetaFilter there is a discussion about towns and places with strange names, and someone posted a link to Sex Peak Lookout, located right here in Montana. Is this true? Any of you folks ever been there? And is it REALLY called “Sex Peak Lookout,” and if so, why?

Bitterroot Iconoclast

Carlotta Grandstaff

If they had been handing out awards in Hamilton this week Ravalli County Sheriff Chris Hoffman would have won for Worst Performance in a Press Conference. Hoffman, a former high school resource officer in his first term, attempted to explain to a standing-r0om-only crowd why four inmates had committed suicide in his jail in the past 15 months. He hit all the wrong notes, and left the assembled crowd of grieving family members, press, county officials and a representative of the Bitterroot Human Rights Alliance wondering why he said anything at all.

All Aboard!

David in Great Falls

Tom rode the rails from Whitefish, MT to Portland, OR, a few days ago, and shares his experience (and a few pix). It sounds pretty cool — some pros (scenery, price) and some cons (hard to sleep, so-so food), but overall definitely something that I would like to try. Anyone else have any train stories to share?

Big Sky via LJ

David in Great Falls

Stumbled across a LiveJournal section devoted to Montana the other day — some interesting insights and people. For instance, there are folks looking for…um…other people, and some great pix of the Fort Peck Lake area, and former residents who are just homesick about Big Sky Country. FWIW, I posted a link over there to the Big Sky Blog, so we may see some of the LJ-ers popping in over here. *waves*

Green Green Grass

David in Great Falls

Sarpy Sam has some great pictures that highlight the beauty of Spring in his corner of Montana. And in other scenery-related news, I visited Giant Springs State Park today (why did I wait nearly three years to do this?!).

Out There With Tom

David in Great Falls

If you haven’t been checking out Tom’s blog, you’re missing a real treat. Tom does things outdoors — namely, hiking and exploring in many of Montana’s wonderful mountains, buttes, and such. Best of all, he brings his camera to share his experience with us. Go take a look, and be sure to scroll down to catch all the pictures.

I sent this out as an e-mail, but I know that there are more than a few of you who I’ve missed.

BRAC (Unofficial)

David in Great Falls

Good news for Montana: the BRAC list does not include Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls. The MT Air National Guard mission is on the list, however.
